Deck Staining
There is nothing better than a deck where you can enjoy the outdoors during the spring, summer and fall. Wood decks are beautiful, but they require upkeep due to constant assault of the natural elements of upstate New York. Over the years the sun, moisture and bugs can wear down and rot the wood if it isn’t properly maintained. Fortunately, our team of professional painters can help make your deck look like new.
It’s recommended that you stain your horizontal deck surfaces every 2 to 4 years. Vertical surfaces can often go longer without being stained. We follow a three step process when staining your deck. We first pressure wash the surface to remove mildew and brighten the color. We then flatten any protruding nails and repair rotted wood boards. Once the deck is properly prepared, we then apply 1 to 2 coats of stain to your deck.
There are three products to choose from when protecting your deck:
Sealant: Sealant allows you to preserve the natural color of your deck. If you deck has greyed over time, a pressure washing can bring it back to its original color, and then it can sealed.
Semi-transparent stain: This is the most popular option since the stain gives the wood a color, while still allowing the grain of the wood to show. The stain will fade over time.
Solid stain: Solid stain is the best option when you’d like a solid color applied to your deck to match the color scheme of your home.
Fence Staining
Fences can be costly to install, so you’ll want to protect your investment with regular washing and staining maintenance. We can apply the same maintenance process to your fence – pressure wash, replacement of rotten wood and a fresh coat of stain.
When to Stain Fresh Wood
It’s important to note that we advise our customers to allow wood surfaces to weather for 3-6 months allowing the wood to cure and wood grain to open before coating your deck or fence material. This allows for a more porous surface when the exterior coatings are applied.
